THE UGLY
1997 / d. Scott Reynolds

Inventive Aussie thriller that owes much of its popularity to its inclusion on the Boogeymen DVD. Timid sociopath and serial murderer Simon Cartwright specifically requests psychologist Dr. Karen Schumaker to evaluate his mental condition. The film then explores the years leading up to his incarceration: everything from his abuse-filled childhood to his gruesome series of straight-razor killings. Stylish black blood, sterile blue lighting, and a compelling story make this one highly recommended.

URBAN LEGEND
1998 / d. Jamie Blanks

Despite the names in the cast, there’s plenty of bad acting in this slasher mystery ode. Thankfully, It’s fun guessing who the killer is and what legend is next. Very entertaining -- the first time you see it. Do, however, skip the crappy sequels. (KB)
